Week of 11/23/2015: Great Turkey Award!!

It's Thanksgiving week!  Students will participate in the Great Turkey Award!

  • Young Fives-2nd grade: centers.  At the end of each center, students color the corresponding feather for that center.  Then, students rotate to the next center.
  • Third-fifth grade: free-flowing centers.  Students work at their own pace, completing one exercise at a time, then coloring the corresponding feather.
See this previous blog post about the Great Turkey Award for more information.

All Grades: Week of THANKSGIVING!!!

This **very short** week in PE, we participated in the Great Turkey Award.  The activity is essentially a color by number turkey, with each turkey feather corresponding to a number, color, AND an exercise.

Young Fives - 2nd graders do this in a structured centers format.  They rotate to stations, participating in each center for about 1 minute.  Then they color in the corresponding feather for that center, sit and point to the next center.  Rotate, and repeat. :)  Centers include:  butterfly stretch, push-ups or ABC strong soldiers, jump rope, jumping jacks, and run laps.

3rd - 5th graders experience a free flowing centers format.  They can move at their own pace, with a small group or individually if they choose.  Centers include:  sit and reach (practice for fitness testing), push-ups or ABC strong soldiers, sit-ups, jump rope forward and backward, run laps, and jumping jacks.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of the Haisley community!!

See the previous blog post about this activity.  :)

PHOTO: The Great Turkey Award

During this short week, students who have PE (Monday/Tuesday PE classes only) will participate in the Great Turkey Award.  This is a fitness color-by-number activity, with a physical exercise or stretch to go with each section of their turkey.

Upper elementary's Great Turkey Award.

Here are third grade students working on their awards.  For this upper elementary activity, we use free-flowing stations, where students move from exercise to exercise at their own pace.

Third graders coloring in their feathers for one exercise.

Lower elementary's Great Turkey Award.  Kindergarten and first grade do this activity in center-format, with a set amount of time at each station to do the exercise and color.  Then, we all rotate to the next center at the same time.  Second grade completes this activity similar to upper elementary, with free-flowing centers where students work at their own pace.

Have a safe and healthy Thanksgiving!!
