Week of 2/8/16: Jump, Jump Centers!!

**Jump Rope for Heart donations were due today (Friday, February 12)!!  The event won't close officially until the end of the week after break, though - if you forgot to turn them in, bring them the week after break!!**

**Thank you to all students who brought me valentines!!  You bring me joy every day, and made me feel special with your valentines!!  Happy Valentine's Day, and have a fabulous mid-winter break!!!**

This week, students experienced jump rope based centers.  Centers included:

Young Fives - 2nd grades:

  • Hula-Hula:  Use the hula hoop as a hula hoop, spin it, jump in and out of it, build a bridge over it, etc.!
  • Jump Rope:  Select a jump rope (that fits you!) and jump!  Practice jumping at your level.  During each class, I spent most of my time helping students at this station with jump rope skills/tricks, or having contests with those who wanted a little friendly competition!!
  • Hula-Jump:  Use the hula hoop as a jump rope, turning it with your hands and stepping through it and/or jumping over it.
  • **First grade health classes only:  This center was dedicated to working on part of a flip book we are finishing called "Germs and Viruses".  Students worked on cutting and gluing the steps to effectively washing hands.  Steps included:
    • Wetting hands with water
    • Put soap on hands
    • Scrub hands!  Between fingers, fronts, backs.
    • Rinse hands
    • Dry hands
    • Turn off faucet with towel, if needed
  • Rope Shapes:  Make shapes with the jump ropes on the floor!  Be creative - work alone or with other group members!  Students LOVE to do this activity!!!
  • Criss-Cross Walk:  Walk and read the sight words while you step in a criss cross pattern.  Gallop, skip, or sideways slide-step back to the start of the walk.
3rd - 5th grades:
  • Hula-Hula: same as above!
  • Jump Rope:  Same as above, except I spent more time with students doing tricks, teaching tricks and turns, and contests!
  • Hula-Jump: same as above!
  • Long Ropes:  Jump while two friends turn the rope.
  • Snaking Jump Rope:  Two students wiggle the jump rope on the floor, while others in the group try to leap over the rope!
Below are pictures from the week, both lower elementary and upper elementary.  I love the photos of students in action, jumping, moving, and having fun!
